Passing on knowledge is part of the Institute's mission: training, here in Haiti, the next generation of reproductive medicine professionals.
An official partnership
The Institute has signed a memorandum of understanding with Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population to train young Haitian health professionals.
A shared vision
Through the memorandum of understanding signed with the Ministry of Public Health and Population, the IHF brings specialized training, structured and adapted to Haitian realities, within reach of the young professionals who will build tomorrow's care.
A national answer to a need that has become urgent
For many years, Haitian professionals who wanted to deepen their knowledge of infertility had to look abroad for training programs. Registration fees, airfare and accommodation, visa difficulties, insecurity and disrupted mobility now put those journeys out of reach for much of the country's young professional workforce. The consequence must not be that specialized training is abandoned, but that new solutions emerge. Training in Haiti brings expertise closer to professionals and teaches a medicine that accounts for the resources actually available, the referral pathways that exist and the needs of Haitian communities.
The IHF-MSPP partnership
The signing of the memorandum of understanding between the Institut Haïtien de Fertilité and the Ministry of Public Health and Population marks a decisive step: it ties specialized expertise to the State's public health mission. This protocol is no mere symbolic gesture: it provides an institutional framework for planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the program.
Why we teach
An institution that keeps its knowledge to itself builds nothing durable. For more than fifteen years, the members of our team have trained young obstetrician-gynecologists, in Haiti and abroad.
To train, finally. An institution that keeps its knowledge to itself builds nothing that lasts. As early as 2010, I brought together a group of young Haitian obstetrician-gynecologists and had them trained in Haiti; they are today among the country's specialists. I have also been teaching for more than thirty years, at the National School of Nursing, at the medical faculty of Université Notre-Dame d'Haïti where I chair the department of gynecology, and at Duke University's Global Health Institute. We want these skills not to stay concentrated in the capital, but to reach the country's other departments over time.
Clinical mentorship
Young professionals learn side by side with the specialists, in consultation rooms and in the laboratory.
Reproductive medicine
Ultrasound, stimulation, insemination, IVF: techniques and protocols are taught inside the Institute itself.
Ethics and rigor
Consent, confidentiality, honest results: the training passes on a practice as much as a standard.
Our objectives
- Evaluate both partners at the same time, so infertility stops being blamed on the woman.
- Raise the quality of history-taking, clinical examination and the couple's initial workup.
- Strengthen counseling, the way results are communicated and shared decision-making.
- Uphold informed consent, confidentiality, dignity and patients' rights.
- Recognize emergencies, risks and situations that call for specialist referral.
- Reduce stigma, false beliefs and practices not grounded in reliable evidence.

Dr Serge Guichard
Obstetrician-gynecologist · Training coordinator

Trained in Port-au-Prince and then in the Paris hospitals, at the Baudelocque maternity and the Broca gynecology centre, he completed a certificate in reproductive biology at Kremlin-Bicêtre and an obstetric sonography placement in New York. He taught at the medical faculty of the State University of Haiti from 1980 to 1996 and practised for fifteen years at the HUEH maternity. He leads the Institute's training program, run in partnership with Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population.
